Living within the embrace of prayer

This has been a long absence and I have missed you. I especially want to thank each of you for praying for Sr. Laura after her car accident last August and for me when I had a total knee replacement in January. We are both recovering and physical therapy is helping immensely.

During my recovery, I discovered the writings of Steven Charleston, a native American elder, author, and retired Episcopal bishop of Alaska. I am touched with compassion as I read his diary and want to share this entry with you today.

Prayer Circle

We are never outside the reach of prayer. No matter who we are, no matter what we do, we are always within the circle of someone’s prayer. We live each day in this field of prayer. We sleep within its embrace; we rise within its blessing. Somewhere, every day, someone of some faith is praying in a way that includes us. They are asking the Holy, by whatever name they know, to have mercy, to heal, to protect others. We walk within that prayer without even knowing it, without ever recognizing its source in the person who prayed it. In the same way, our own prayers reach the most distant stranger, until none of us are ever beyond the hope we share.

As we enter into the holiest season of the year, may we be strengthened in our faith that our prayer touches the people who need it as we receive what we need and desire as well.

A blessed Easter and springtime Alleluia to you and yours!
